Religion and Help-Seeking: Theological Conservatism and Preferences for Mental Health Assistance

Religious affiliation and attendance have been shown to affect various facets of mental health, including the willingness seek health assistance; however, little is known about how theological beliefs influence people’s assessments religious secular assistance options. Prior research using conservatism (beliefs scripture, sin, salvation) has conceptualized this perspective as being a schema in which dimensions operate tandem. Nonetheless, given personalized nature study three interrelated, but distinctly different belief system. Using data from NORC General Social Survey’s (GSS) 2006 2018 waves (N = 2563), enlists fruitful underutilized approach gauging perceptions through use situational vignettes that prompt survey respondent appraisals sets circumstances possible solutions.
